CNN —Victoria Beckham’s Paris Fashion Week show was disrupted by animal rights activists as they joined her models on the catwalk to protest her brand’s use of animal products such as leather. Protesters in white vests reading “turn your back on animal skins” and “animals aren’t fabric” walked along models on the runway on Friday, holding signs reading “Viva vegan leather,” before being escorted away by security. Animal rights group Peta said that although Beckham’s brand has banned the use of fur and exotic skins in its collections, it still uses leather, including calfskin. “No garment or accessory is worth violently slaughtering and skinning a sensitive and intelligent animal,” PETA Vice President for Europe Mimi Bekhechi said in a statement. Her autumn/winter 2024 collection showcased styles including sheer dresses, garments with sculpted curved hems and necklines, and boxy blazers.

LOW-KEY LUXURY At the fall fashion shows, many designers proposed quiet, classic clothes rife with sophistication. From left: fall looks from Fendi, the Row and Loro Piana. This season put an end to that. Perhaps inspired by political and economic uncertainty, or maybe by the fact that women exist in the tangible world again, not just behind filtered screens, brands including Saint Laurent, the Row, Bottega Veneta and Fendi turned out exquisitely wearable, sometimes understated clothes. The shift in tone resonated with guests, some of whom are cautiously optimistic it might last beyond this crucial season for the brand.

TRYING TO SPOT casual clothes at the recent menswear shows was a bit like playing “Where’s Waldo?” Sober, dressier items so outnumbered once-dominant streetwear staples on the catwalks that if you spied a hoodie, jeans or flashy sneakers, you felt like you’d won a game. This season belonged to investment pieces: sharp-shouldered suits, chunky polished-leather shoes, heirloom-quality coats. Guys bored of schlubby sweats and wary of splashing out money on overly loud, quick-to-date clothes when the cost of living is wincingly high. Less clear: How they will fare in the real world, when they hang off average-size mortals, not long-limbed models. One stylist friend announced, half-seriously, that he feared these coats would make his shorter clients look like kids who’d raided their dads’ closets.
